Country and Western music and real life (don’t laugh at me, this is serious) stories woven round a little pub with its feet in debt and its heart in C&W.
Francis Millard owns a pub in a small western Queensland town. Francis dies and leaves it to cousin Edgar of Highgate
Cousin Edgar, dead broke but genteel. comes out to sell the pub.
Matt, the pub’s nominee, has hopes of turning the pub into ‘The Heart of Country and Western’
Edgar’s plans for a swift sale get thwarted time and again.
If You Don’t Like C&W, You’ve Never Broke Your Heart...
Edgar arrives to finalise the paperwork and sell ‘The Cricketers’ Arms. There obviously isn’t much to sell and not a lot of takers and Matt immediately starts his campaign to rejig the place as a Country and Western haven. Edgar, anxious to tidy the place up and get it sold, argues for an ‘olde English Pub’ restoration, or possibly just a coat of paint Matt quits and walks out.
Within a week, Edgar agrees to ‘Blue Bayou’ a country and western decor and guest
artists each week.
Within another week, it’s obvious to Matt that Edgar doesn’t have a brass razoo
‘Blue Bayou’ is a good name. The idea of country and western is pretty cluey too -trouble is, they cant afford the top line artists. In fact they can’t really afford any artists at all, so they lie.
That’s OK as it turns out the artist they hire sight unseen has lied too.
Matt and Edgar and Marge (the barmaid) and Clancy (the cook) and Vic (the most regular regular) and Ernie (Marge’s lover) grow on you as you get to know them~ knitting their characters rita a sad/funny human tapestry of hope and disappointment. Kind of like a C&W song.~
Thirteen self contained stories, each based around a C&W song.
Cross-over between drama and sitcom.
Guest C&W artist for each episode.
Continuing thread of Matt, Edgar and their staff, the locals, their lives, loves and digestion
EPISODE 1: “Too Long on The Road
An old singer comes for a gig at the Bayou - this will be his swan song before he hangs up his guitar. Relative obscurity’s a heavy’ load to carry. Even harder to put down
When her husband dies, Marge refuses to sleep with Ernie because ‘he might he watching’. How does Ernie fight a ghost? Clancy finally supplies the answer.
EPISODE 2: “City Slick, Country Wise”
Hostility towards an urban cowboy turns to grudging respect when the boy starts to sing - not all the sad stories are born in the country.
Edgar gets a little too involved with the problems of the lovely Linda when her sixteen stone boyfriend turns up, Vic grudgingly comes to the Poms aid with a limp wrist routine which will taint his reputation forever - but save Edgar.
EPISODE 3: ‘Ballad of Long Thap’
C&W singing Vietnam vet and a fiddle-playing Vietnamese pastry cook get together to create a whole new sound,
Edgar puts the reborn pub on the market and makes plans to take rightful inheritance and return to England. When a Sydney based firm starts sniffing, Matt realises his job’s on the line and takes action.
EPISODE 4: “Momma Gave Me These Eyes’
Big, buxom Beth Winslow hits town like a southerly buster. She’s got a two-hankie voice - and for the first time the Bayou’s packed. Could she save the business? Could -she be the woman of Edgar’s dreams in more ways than one7
The cook goes mad and has to be taken away by the boys in whitecoats. With the house packed. Mat decides a little madness is easier to put up with than a rowdy crowd of hungry people
EPISODE 5 “A Man and His Dog”
Clancy’s beloved blue heeler Jenny dies Clancy’s real pissed about this because the dog died on Peter Dykes property - most likely lured there by the man’s red bitchl Now you can lose your woman and you can lose your land - but when you lose your dog there’s no comfort a man knows. Peter Dykes is pretty pissed too - his prize bitch Bruce us up the duff - and he’s got a pretty good idea who did it. Sure enough. Bruce has pups and sure enough. one of them’s the spitting image of Jenny
Edgar’s sister Eileen turns up demanding he repay the loan she made him ten year’s before Looks as though he will have to sell the pub after all.
The cook reckons the only way to get her off their backs is to kill her or marry her off All eyes turn to Clancy - would he?Could he? He’s happy to kill her - but romance her7 Even if he knew how, she wouldn’t have it on in a fit. Boy. does Eileen surprise them all.,.
EPISODE 6 “IF MY HEART WERE A BLACKTOP…
The Eudlo Brothers come to town. This is real red earth OZ C&W at its best but what the town doesn’t know is that Crank Eudlo has penned his last lyric, dried up, hit a wall
Clancy approaches them and asks if they’ll write a song just for Eileen Crank’s brother Piston gives him the bad news - there’s no more water in that well. Clancy starts to singing a song-less sort of tune to himself “No one knows when I look at you there’s a grinding of gears in my heart”. Crank overhears him and picks up the ‘tune’ In two seconds they’ve got a song. Crank diplomatically suggests they change the words a little and ‘If My Heart Were a Blacktop (I’d Drive Outta Town. ‘) is born
EPISODE 7: “Hanging Up Your Dreams to Die”
Matt organises a reunion for his old group (yes, we thought he had more than just a liking for C&W .) and they find they’ve all come to a watershed in their lives. The can’t help but dream about what their lives might have been like if the group hadn’t broken up
Edgar officially loses his Pommie status...
And so the stories go. two threads per ep. The lead string is our foursome in the Bayou, the meshing threads are the self contained stories which touch the lives of our four, the people of the town and the artists who pass through...
EPISODE ‘13: ‘1 Oprey’s Not Over Till the Last Note’s Died ..’
The denouement for the threads spun above: Clancy gets Eileen and Jenny II, Beth heads back for the road. Lap Sing returns to pastry, Charles gets Priscella (who?) and Matt and Edgar are left with the echoing wail of the fiddle and the overdraft, Somewhere along the line we’ve got to know these people better . and maybe they’ve found a little bit of that dream they were all looking for..
